michealemery:

You are right, investigation comes from unbiased and objective individuals. Should we leave this to the medical professionals, the ER staff, neurologists, GP etc who actually treated this individual to uncover the cause? Of course not, we cannot trust their competence, we must call in people who read an obituary and then of course follow the unbiased questionnaire coming from the least biased person regarding chiropractic, Diane. She is so objective, that whenever manipulation is mentioned, she of course implores that all chiropractors should stop maiming, paralyzing and killing their patients as if we all have the EMS on speed dial to take care of the daily victims. I am absolutely suprised their was not a question 6 on her list, "do you know if the individual had any axons being dismantled" which of course, Diane could have swooped in like a hawk and been the hero.

What's next, scour the obits for any individual who died in a stroke, contact the family and recite Diane trademarked 5 points. THere are 700,000 who suffer a stroke each year, you better get started soon.

I don't know why this popped into my head, but one of my childhood heroes was Johnny Unitas. Those who know his story, also know he died of a heart attack while at a physical therapy office. Should I, in the spirit of finding out the truth of what happened, call the Unitas family with a series of questions to get the truth? I just think of what would the outrage be if you substituted physical therapy office with chiropractic office.

IT is absolutely terrible that a 29 year old died from a stroke, we all agree on that. But, unless the family wishes to make this public, any information regarding her health history is none of our damn business.

To answer your question, if this we are friend or a child of one of my friends, I would absolutely be curious as to why. But one of the first 5 things I said to them would not be whether they had a cervical manipulation . Most certainly, I would never contact a complete stranger unsolicited and ask this question to satisfy some morbid curiosity.

 Chiropractors Angry about Bus Ad

It looks like Stephen Barrett, M.D. has been hard at work writing an article about the anti-chiropractic bus ad's on the east coast.

http://www.chirobase.org/08Legal/bus_ad.html

On May 24, WTNH-TV aired a program about the bus ad which described the Chiropractic Stroke Victims Awareness Group as "victims, family members and friends who have been traumatized" by chiropractic treatment and "whose lives have been destroyed." [7] Two members appeared on the program. The first, identified as "Britt," said she had reached an out-of-court settlement after having a stroke about three years ago in her chiropractor's office. Britt continues to receive physical therapy and requires a feeding tube because she' has lost the ability to swallow. The other member is Linda Solsbury, a former nurse who won a jury award after suffering a stroke during an adjustment 20 years ago. She is partially paralyzed, can't speak, and must use a keyboard to communicate. The book Chiropractic: The Greatest Hoax of the Century? has a chapter about her case [8].

My father died of a heart attack when he was very young. For several weeks trangers called my mother asking about info regarding his death since it was untimely. I wanted to meet them in a back alley with a bat.
Please do not stick your nose where it doesn't belong. As the family would probably say, NOYDB.
I know that was off topic of the Stroke sign, but I had to put my 2 cents in.

Injured by a Chiropractor? Terry Rondberg
« Reply #34 on Jul 1, 2006, 12:14pm »

Here is an e-mail from Terry...

Quote:
First the billboard ... then the buses ... now, print ads!

A Washington Post ad shouts: "INJURED BY A CHIROPACTOR?"

It's not a large ad but it got plenty of notice, printed in The Washington Post, which has a circulation of more than 5 million.

In large, bold, capital letters were the words: "INJURED BY A CHIROPRACTOR?" Underneath was the phone number and e-mail of a group called the "Chirostroke Victim's Awareness Group."

The ad's headline was identical to the one used on the billboard and bus ad in Connecticut, although the phone number was different and there was no reference to the URL www.neck911usa.com

So far, we're seeing just the tip of the iceberg. It's clear that this is a carefully planned and well-funded campaign with two major goals:

1. Erode the public's confidence in chiropractic and scare people away from chiropractors

2. Drum up business for lawyers and "consultants" who want to file million dollar lawsuits against DCs

If it isn't stopped, it may very well succeed on both counts.

Look at the numbers. If just 3% of the 5 million Washington Post readers are influenced by the ad in that paper, chiropractors in the Washington/east Maryland area could have 150,000 fewer potential patients. If each of those people tell just four others at home or work, that means more than half a million fewer people willing to go to a chiropractor -- just because of this one small ad! It's possible that as many as 10% of these are already chiropractic patients ... but not for long!

You can’t afford to have half a million people in your town or city
decide that chiropractic is too dangerous…
You can’t afford to have 10% of your current patients leave you out of fear!

This type of ad is going to spread to other parts of the country ... and even around the world. Already there’s another "stroke victims" website in the United Kingdom. Before long, the Internet will be flooded with their anti-chiropractic message reaching millions more on a daily basis.

The World Chiropractic Alliance has already begun to fight these attacks. We've blanketed the media -- including the Internet -- with information about the safety of chiropractic and the wildly inaccurate claims by these "stroke victims" groups. If you Google the words “chiropractic stroke,” you'll see that the entire first page of "hits" is for anti-chiropractic reports -- EXCEPT for the World Chiropractic Alliance's page that explains the safety of chiropractic!
Hotmail has replaced this image to help protect your privacy. Click 'Show images once or Add sender to safe list' above to display images if you trust the sender of this message.

We've also retained the ONLY lawyer in America who has faced off and/or defeated chiropractic hater Stephen Barrett and his "Quackbusters" group in court more than SIX TIMES!

Carlos Negrete's legal team is now planning and preparing an aggressive counterattack aimed at stopping these anti-chiropractic hate groups from using lies and misinformation to slander our profession.

Stand with us. Support this effort to show the world that chiropractic is SAFE and that the so-called "link" to strokes is totally unsupported by facts. Help us defeat these fear-mongers who want to destroy our profession!

You know the old saying, "If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem." Be part of the SOLUTION by supporting the WCA Chiropractic Anti-Defamation Fund to finance the battle against the anti-chiropractic campaign. EVERY PENNY WILL BE USED TO PAY FOR ANTI-DEFAMATION FUND PUBLIC RELATIONS AND LEGAL EFFORTS!

Let's do this together!

Yeah, next I think we should work on an off Broadway opera called "Don't Go Breaking My Neck" with proceeds to go to chiro stroke victims. What do you folks think?

CONNECTICUT CHIROPRACTORS STILL BATTLING

A rash of anti-chiropractic legislation now has the profession on high alert.

By Kathryn Feather, Associate Editor

Chiropractors in the state of Connecticut may be feeling a little battle-weary as they continue to fight legislative and public relations efforts aimed at discrediting the chiropractic profession and placing strict boundaries around how they practice.

Starting in late 2005, Dynamic Chiropractic began to report about the situation in Connecticut (see www.chiroweb.com/states/connecticut.html for complete coverage).

This included two anti-chiropractic billboards and a bus advertisement, all sponsored by a group claiming to be concerned about the potential risk of stroke following chiropractic manipulation. In an open letter to Connecticut Chiropractic Association members on March 8, 2007, CCA President Matt Pagano, DC, summed up the disturbing developments that have taken place over the past few years.

“Late in 2005, the billboards started. They were followed shortly thereafter with the newspaper ads, then it was the buses … in various markets, followed by more newspaper ads and concurrently other smaller billboards in smaller markets. Each time, despite the www.neck911.com reference on the ads there was always the reference to the ‘Chiropractic Stroke Victim’s Awareness Group.’ Alternately, lately we have seen an appearance of the ‘Victims of Chiropractic Abuse.’ Most recently, we have seen a spate of unprecedented anti-chiropractic legislation.”

The CCA has responded to these events with a public relations campaign of its own. In March of this year, the CCA unleashed print, radio and television advertisements, with the help of many and at a cost of more than $100,000. However, legislation now winding its way through various stages of committee in the state legislature is perhaps the most potentially damaging. The CCA has employed intense lobbying efforts to show its support and its concerns regarding several aspects of these bills.

Perhaps the most damaging bill, at least as introduced, is S.B.249, which requires that insurers report to the state insurance department whenever they pay a medical malpractice claim against a chiropractor. The commissioner will tabulate the results (number of claims and amounts paid) of such malpractice data each year and submit a report to the state General Assembly. The CCA felt strongly that this bill unfairly targeted chiropractic, which has the lowest malpractice claims in the state, according to the association. The CCA voiced its objections to this, but did acknowledge it would not object to malpractice data reporting if other professions were included. CCA lobbyists claimed victory on March 13, when the Insurance and Real Estate Committee voted 13-1 to advance S.B.249 to the floor only after adopting an amendment requiring all medical professionals with malpractice insurance (not just chiropractors) to report claims data to the state insurance department.

The CCA also has set its sights on S.B.1252, which requires that a patient be informed orally and in writing of the risks and possible side effects of any chiropractic procedure, including manipulations, as well as to obtain a patient’s written consent before providing treatment. Failure to comply with this provision could lead to disciplinary action by the state chiropractic board of examiners. According to a legislative briefing update sent to members, the “CCA opposes S.B.1252 in its current form. We would have no objection to a statutory requirement governing informed consent if all other medical professions were included. We simply object to being singled out unfairly.”

However, not all of the legislation making its way through committee is potentially damaging to the CCA and the chiropractic profession. Passage of S.B.394 is a priority for the CCA. This bill would limit a patient deductible or copayment to the lesser of either the copay or deductible required for a primary care physician visit, or 25 percent of the total fee for services rendered. According to the CCA briefing update, the “CCA strongly supports S.B.394. The legislation will bring equity and fairness back to the payment of chiropractic claims by insurers. Shifting these costs to patients through excessive co-payments or deductibles will be prohibited.”

Two additional bills now pending in the Human Services Committee could restore chiropractic coverage to low income residents. S.B.1359 deals with the provision of chiropractic services under the state-administered general assistance program, while S.B.1360 addresses the availability of optional services under the Medicaid program. “The CCA strongly supports both bills. The state is currently facing a substantial budget surplus. A very small part of that surplus should be devoted to reinstating critical health services that were previously available to the low income, needy citizens of Connecticut. The 2007 session is making health care reform and expansion of programs that will cover the uninsured a major priority. Let’s not forget the most vulnerable citizens of Connecticut during this debate.”

In his open letter to association members, Dr. Pagano praised the CCA’s lobbying efforts. “We are informing legislators of the fact that the proposed legislation [S.B.249 and S.B.1252] unfairly singles out the chiropractic profession. We are eroding any support in the committee that might exist for the passage of these bills. Having a permanent presence at the Capitol afforded by our lobbyist has once again proved invaluable as we move forward through this process. When at the Capitol, we have presented a professional impression as would befit a mature, confident profession.”

Anti-chiropractic group expands campaign

The Chiropractic Stroke Awareness Group (CSAG), the group that has been airing an anti-chiropractic television commercial on a Fox news affiliate in Connecticut, is expanding its television awareness campaign in the state.

And, on Nov. 3, the group relaunched its print advertising campaign in the New Haven (Connecticut) Register.

The group’s new commercial is airing on the ABC affiliate, and asks viewers, ”Have you been injured by a chiropractor?”

The organization allegedly represents hundreds of people across the country who have been injured by chiropractic treatment. It is an offspring of the consumer group that has been attacking chiropractic in Connecticut with billboards and bus ads since 2003.

The Connecticut Chiropractic Council (CCC), the International Chiropractors Association (ICA), the Connecticut Chiropractic Association (CCA), and the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) are all addressing the anti-chiropractic campaign of the organization. (See “Anti-chiropractic ad appears on Connecticut TV” www.chiroeco.com/antichiropractic, which reported on the airing of the initial TV ad.)

Anti-chiropractic group expands negative campaign to Massachusetts

The Chiropractic Stroke Awareness Group (CSAG) has expanded its outdoor advertising campaign from Connecticut to Massachusetts and has reinstituted a billboard campaign in Connecticut.

The group put up a billboard that can be seen by motorists driving along the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) in Chicopee, Mass. The sign asks, "Have you been injured by a chiropractor?"

The anti-chiropractic group has sponsored billboards, bus and newspaper ads, and television commercials in Connecticut. It claims not to be against chiropractic, but to raise awareness of the dangers of chiropractic adjustments.

Amanda Thompson, spokesperson for the group, said in a press release the organization plans to expand its campagin in other regions in the coming months.

We Get Letters & E-Mail

Time to Tell the Chiropractic Truth

Dear Editor:

How long? How long will we wait until we do something? Anything.

I, for one, am tired of standing by and doing nothing. So I wrote a letter to the editor.

For the past two or three years, Connecticut has been bombarded with anti-chiropractic advertising. Some say it will go away. Some say there is nothing we can do legally. Some say it just looks like a greedy lawyer looking for malpractice cases. It does look like that. And no, it’s not going away.

Now they are in Massachusetts. How long before they are in your state? Are you going to sit by idly and watch it all play out? Or are you going to get in the game?

Buses, billboards, Yellow Pages, TV and newspaper ads – Victims of Chiropractic Abuse is covering all its bases. It is using every possible media outlet it can to spread its anti-chiropractic message: “Have you been injured by a chiropractor/chiropractic manipulation?”

We in Connecticut hear their case never went to court; that the chiropractors’ malpractice insurance settled out of court – $11 million in all. That’s what we hear. But what’s the truth?

Who cares? Do you? The VOCA is slandering us. It is insinuating we hurt people badly. What would our forefathers do? Did they go to jail so we could rub backs and collect huge insurance checks? Would they be running away the way we are today? Would they have sat behind their desks and insurance payments like we all are? Or would they have been ready to man up and play some defense?

It’s time we all took our heads out of the sand. It’s time to do something – anything. It’s time to take out our own billboard, print ad, TV spot or radio ad. It’s time to tell those we love and serve what we do – truthfully. It’s time to support our brothers and sisters in Connecticut and stop this tyranny before it gets out of control. Donate to the Connecticut Chiropractic Council or the Connecticut Chiropractic Association. Write your own letter to the editor at the Hartford Courant. Place an ad in your local newspaper, citing the truth about chiropractic. Do something.

I heard a lawyer once say, “A lie that goes uncontested becomes the truth.” He’s right. So, for now, they’re telling the truth. And we haven’t contested it. How long are you going to wait and allow this to continue?
